LAHORE, Aug 15: Celebrating Independence Day, revellers made life a hell on Aug 13 and 14. Throwing firecrackers on roads and cars, doing wheelie and teasing families were the scenes witnessed on roads and parks.

Unruly youth who thronged all parts of the city would resort to dancing in the center of busy roads and then do wheelie on their motorcycles having no mufflers. “What kind of Independence Day is this?” asked Azeem Ahmad, who together with his family was stuck in a traffic mess near Barkat Market.

Carrying sticks and bamboos, hundreds of police deployed to maintain order just did a hide and seek job because it was almost impossible for them to handle so many unruly people.

“I am least bothered about independence. I am just availing a chance to have some fun,” a reveller among a group of over 20 motorcyclists said while eating burger at Gulberg Main Market. “You tell me where should we go for recreation. Is there any good place you could guide us for having fun,” he added.

Not only the main roads, the joyriders were also seen on streets in various localities, mainly with an aim to tease girls. “I myself witnessed at least four incidents in which hapless girls were physically abused by eve-teasers,” Zubair Shah, a resident of Allama Iqbal Town, said.

Youth riding cars added to the traffic mess when they would halt their vehicles midway just to dance on Indian tunes.

There were reports of long traffic jams on main roads, with The Mall, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Jail Road and Ferozpur Road heavily crowded.
