DADU, Aug 2: The District Council of Jamshoro on Wednesday demanded through a resolution that the Sindh government carry out assessment of damages to houses and villages in the district caused by recent heavy rains and compensate the affecte people.

Council member Lala Rehman moved the resolution in the council’s meeting at the SDA office in the Shahbaz Building. It said that the heavy rain had damaged a large number of houses in different villages and towns of the district but the Sindh government and district officers had not paid any attention.

Some 50 houses in the Bhirya village, near Jamshoro Phatak, were flooded but the government did not set up any relief camp to help them, he regretted.

Another member, Lala Ayaz Pathan, feared diseases might break out among hundreds of families who had shifted from mountainous areas in the wake of rains and demanded that the government send doctors’ teams to the areas.

The council unanimously passed the resolution and demanded that the Sindh government release special funds to help compensate the affected people.

Through another resolution, the council demanded the government carry out repair work of the 109-year-old Kotri Bridge, which was in a very dilapidated condition and might collapse anytime if heavy traffic did not stop passing over it.

The council passed the resolution presented by Amir Shah and demanded that the federal and provincial governments allocate funds for the bridge’s repairs.

Allah Bachayo pointed out that some influential men had encroached upon costly lands in different areas of the district where they had started erecting buildings. The council supported the resolution and demanded that the nazim conduct a survey of government lands in the district and take action in this regard.

Imam Bux drew the council’s attention to the reports that some government officials were trying to set up district headquarters at Thermal Power House some four kilometres from Jamshoro town.

It would put people in unnecessary trouble, he said adding that the district headquarters should be established at some place between LUMHS and Kotri town.

Roshan Buriro said that the council would resist Hyderabad district’s plans under the proposed city government to merge union councils 1 and 2 of Kotri town into Hyderabad. The council put its weight behind the resolution.

Gul Mohammad Shoro said through a motion that the ban imposed on teachers’ organizations should be implemented while Roshan Buriro drew the council’s attention towards the absence of DCO, EDOs of works and services, health and education from the session.

District Naib Nazim Abdul Hameed Buledi who presided over the session directed the officials of different departments to attend the session.

BANDIT HELD: A bandit was arrested following an encounter in Shaheed Makhdoom Bilawal town of the district on Monday night.

Police identified him as Wahid Bux alias Wadhoo Chandio.

The raiding party, however, failed to arrest his three other accomplices.

DPO Nadir Hussain Khoso received an information that four bandits were hiding in the town.

He sent a police team to the area which arrested gang leader Wahid Bux alias Wadhoo Chandio after an encounter.
