LAHORE, July 17: Eighteen special magistrates have been nominated to act against profiteers and hoarders in the city. A notification to this effect was issued by District Coordination Officer (DCO) Muhammad Ijaz on Monday.
The 18 officers holding powers of first class magistrate will exclusively “try offences relating to price control, with the powers to raid and try the offences on the spot in their respective areas,” says the notification issued under Section 14-A of the Criminal Penal Code better known as CrPC.
They may impose a fine of Rs15,000 or hand down a jail term up to six months to traders who will sell commodities over and above the prices fixed by the competent authorities.
The magistrates, who have been allotted certain areas, will submit to the DCO daily proceedings of their raids.
Executive district officer, revenue Malik Muhammad Bakhsh will supervise these special magistrates who will start operation from Tuesday (today) as citizens have been requested to get their complaints registered against profiteers at phone number 9210633.
