GUJRANWALA, July 17: Residents of People’s Colony blocked GT Road on Monday in protest against the kidnapping of the union council nazim and his driver.

The protesters said UC nazim Liaquat Ali Mehr was on his way home when some unidentified people kidnapped him along with driver Karamatullah. They said the police had failed to recover them despite the lapse of 20 days.

The protesters, led by naib nazim Jamil Ahmad Kamboh and councillors Basharat Ali, Shahzad and Mukhtar (the nazim’s brother) paraded on various roads and reached Gondlanwala Chowk where they chanted slogans against the police. Traffic remained suspended for an hour.

Later, they reached the DPO office where senior police officers assured them that the nazim and his driver would be recovered soon. After this assurance, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

The police said the car of the nazim was recovered from Pindi Bhattian.

DIG’S DIRECTIVE: The range police have been ordered to launch an operation against proclaimed offenders, cattle thieves and hardened criminals.

At a meeting here on Monday, DIG Malik Mohammad Iqbal said the police officials involved in keeping innocent people in illegal confinement, torture and death in custody would not be tolerated.

He also ordered DPOs and other police officers to monitor the activities of their subordinates.

COURT ORDER: A local court on Monday ordered registration of a case against three police officials, including a sub-inspector, on the charge of raiding the outhouse of a man.

Alam Chowk police post in charge SI Azim Shah, head-constable Nasir Ahmad and constable Salamat Ali had raided the outhouse of Chaudhry Shabbir and taken away a pistol and Rs8,000 in cash.
