GLASGOW: Pakistan’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games continued to yield mixed results on Monday, with lawn bowler Ayub Qureshi ending his singles campaign on a winning note while sprinter Faiqa Riaz produced a national record-breaking performance despite narrowly missing out on the semi-finals.

Ayub defeated Jamaica’s Robert Simpson 13-3, 9-5 in his final men’s singles group match to finish with two wins from five outings. However, the result was not enough to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The standout performance of the day came from Faiqa, who shattered the Pakistan women’s 100 metres national record after clocking 11.64 seconds in the heats.

The mark eclipsed the previous record of 11.81s set by Olympian Naseem Hameed at the 2010 South Asian Games.

Despite the historic run, Faiqa finished 21st overall in a field of 52 athletes, missing out on a semi-final berth by just 0.12 seconds as the top 17 advanced.

Pakistan’s athletics contingent endured another setback when Ansar Abbas failed to qualify for the men’s long jump final.

Ansar managed a best effort of 7.06 metres in the qualification round to finish 18th among 20 competitors, with only the top 12 progressing.

Pakistan’s swimmers also endured another difficult day in the pool.

Ahmed Durrani and Hamza Asif failed to advance from the men’s 100m freestyle heats after posting times of 53.09 and 53.43 seconds respectively, finishing 44th and 47th overall.

In the women’s 50m breaststroke, Hareem Malik clocked 36.52 seconds to place 24th, as Pakistan’s wait for a breakthrough performance in swimming continued.

Late on Sunday, Pakistan’s boxers bowed out of the competition after defeats in the round of 16.

Sumama Rehman suffered a unanimous 5-0 loss to India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam in the men’s 55kg contest, while Mailaika Zahid, despite making a strong start by taking the opening round, lost 4-1 to Zambia’s C. Mwape.
