KARACHI: Many city areas will experience an acute water shortage after a power breakdown hit the Dhabeji Pumping Stations of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) on Sunday.

A KWSC spokesperson said that the breakdown occurred at 8:45am in the third phase of the pumping station, due to which the power supply to the phase remained suspended.

The three pumps at the pumping station had been temporarily shut down, causing a shortfall of 75 million gallons per day (MGD) in the city’s water supply, he said, adding that areas to be affected include parts of North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulberg Town, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Scheme 33.

He stated that KWSC was in constant contact with KE for immediate rectification of the fault and full restoration of electricity.

“All pumps will be made operational immediately after complete restoration of power to bring the water supply back to normal,” the spokesperson added.

However, a KE spokesperson clarified that the fault in KDA Pumping Feeder 2, which supplies electricity to the Dhabeji Pumping Station, “is internal in nature and is not related to K-Electric”.

“Power supply to 19 out of 22 pumping motors at the Dhabeji Pumping Station is continuing as normal,” the spokesperson said, adding that a power utility team was in contact with the relevant authorities to assist KWSC in addressing the fault.
