LARKANA: Awami Tehreek (AT) has criticised the campaign for a new province within Sindh resumed by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan. It criticised the establishment for “encouraging it to revive the campaign”.

AT General Secretary Advocate Sajid Hussain Mahesar and Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiyar expressed their views at the party’s Larkana chapter meeting on Sunday. The meeting was chaired by AT District President Ali Hassan Wako.

They noted that while dacoits had been given a freehand in the rural Sindh, the MQM-P was being given an open leeway in the urban areas.

central leaders remarked that those demanding a new province should go to their ancestral regions of UP and CP to create the same. “Sindh is the historic homeland of the Sindhi nation; Sindhi people will not tolerate any conspiracy to divide the province under any circumstances,” they said.

They termed Muttahida’s demand for a new province to be carved out from within Sindh a conspiracy against the country.

The AT leaders also accused the establishment of seeking to plunder Sindh’s resources. They condemned that Sindh’s three rivers — Ravi, Beas and Sutlej — were doled out to India. They blamed PPP for the handing over of the rivers to India, pointing out that its founding chairman Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was holding the portfolio of water and power minister at that time.

The AT leader also criticised PPP for not taking up the issue of a drastic cut in Sindh’s share in the Indus water effectively at the relevant forums and for not pressing the Centre on the issue of NFC Award.

They alleged that Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari would now offer the Indus River in lieu of premiership.

The AT leaders noted with grave concern that the PPP government was allotting Sindh’s lands for corporate farming. They repeated the allegation that President Asif Ali Zardari had given his approval for the six controversial canals. “The Jalalpur Canal has also been built by the present government with PPP being its ally,” they noted.

They said the Sindhi nation must widen the scope of its peaceful and democratic struggle to protect its lands and rivers.

The meeting was attended among others by Zulfikar Ali Mirani, Mohammad Yousuf Jakhro, Mohammad Khan Chandio, Aitezaz Gaincho and Dr Suresh.
