AMMAN: The funeral of King Abdullah, killed by an Arab gunman ... took place quietly today [July 23]. Entrance to the Palace grounds, where the 69-year-old King’s body had been lying in state, was restricted to people carrying special permits. Arab Legion officers, with tears streaming down their faces, carried the coffin from the Palace to a gun carriage. Then the King’s body was borne on the carriage to the Royal Burial Ground.

The Royal Regiment and other troops, including a detachment of the Iraqi Army, lined the route. A 21-gun salute was fired as the coffin was lowered into the grave. — News agencies

[Meanwhile news agencies from Jerusalem report that] Firing was heard throughout last night [July 22] and this morning from the Old City of Jerusalem where the Arab Legion was rounding up supporters of Al-Jihad el-Moqaddas ... to which King Abdullah’s assassin is said to have belonged. As the Legion Com­mand poured more troops … and reportedly disarmed … local police … reports from Heb­ron and Bethlehem said people were holding a general strike as a protest against arrests… . Several people were killed and wounded in Jerusalem this morning in clashes between the residents and the Legion… .
