GILGIT: As power outages in multiple areas of Gilgit exceeded six hours amid hot weather, residents took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the protracted outages and raised slogans against the authorities concerned.
They burnt tyres and blocked the main Quaid-i-Azam Road at Public Chowk in Jutial for several hours, demanding that the government ensure uninterrupted power supply. Due to prolonged outages, water supply in several areas has also been suspended, making the situation unbearable for residents, the protesters said, adding that the Gilgit-Baltistan government has failed to ensure electricity supply.
Similar protests were held in Kundas, Danyore, and Amphary. A large number of women gathered at the RCC Bridge in Kundas and blocked the KIU Road in protest. They urged authorities to address the power crisis without delay and ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity and water in their neighbourhoods.
