QUETTA: The leaderships of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) have initiated efforts to unite opposition parties in view of the worsening political and security situation in the country, particularly in Balochistan.

Leaders of the two parties have established contact to explore the possibility of forging a united opposition and devising a joint strategy against what they describe as the government’s policies. Sources said senior BNP-M and PTI leaders held a telephone conversation on Tuesday during which they discussed the country’s political situation and underscored the need for greater unity among opposition parties.

BNP-M Central Senior Vice President Advocate Sajid Tareen spoke with PTI senior leader and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaisar on a range of political issues, including the prevailing political climate, the role of the opposition and the challenges facing the people of Pakistan, particularly those in Balochistan.

BNP-M sources said both leaders described the current government as “illegitimate”.
