LAHORE/SAHIWAL/GUJRAT: Eight people died and 14 were injured in rain-related incidents in Gujranwala, Narowal, Pakpattan and Lahore as heavy rain lashed these cities on Tuesday. Gujranwala city received 238mm that broke the 10 years record, followed by Gujrat with 153mm.
According to our Gujrat correspondent, the heavy downpour in Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot caused the worst urban flooding that paralysed the routine life in these industrial areas.
At least six people, mostly children, died and 10 others were injured in different rain-related incidents in Gujranwala city alone whereas a trailer plunged into a ditch after being slipped due to the rain on GT Road Bypass in Gujrat. According to the rescue officials, the deaths and injuries were caused by the roof and walls collapse as well as drowning in the pond or electrocution.
The deceased in Gujranwala included two siblings, Usman (10) and Sameer (6), in the Dhaley area and Shaheen (7) and six months old Shayan near Naushera Virkan Road. Another child drowned after falling into the pond at an underpass in Kamoke city while one Hanaan was electrocuted in the Bakhteywala area. Sameera Bibi (25) and six-month-old Mowais were seriously injured after being buried under the rubble. A wall of the rice mill collapsed on Tatle Aali Kamunki Road near Kamoke. As a result, Fahad Hussain died after being buried under the rubble while Arif and Mahmood were seriously injured.
Rain breaks 10-year record in Gujranwala city, submerges Gujrat, Narowal
On the Allama Iqbal Road of Gujranwala, Hanan Ikram (25) was going to the market for shopping during the rain when he was electrocuted by an electric pole. On Naushera Virkan Road, the roof of the house collapsed. As a result, Shaheen (7) and 6-month-old Shan Ali died after being buried under the rubble. Salmi Bibi, 33, Sana, 10, and Khadija, 5, were injured in the accident. In Zaheer Colony, Gujranwala, the roof of the house collapsed, injuring Sidra Nadeem (28), Sameera Nadeem (14), and Saira Nadeem (10) who were seriously injured after being buried under the debris.
The main roads and adjoining streets in Gujrat and Gujranwala cities were submerged by rainwater after a 10 hours long downpour. The commercial activities and the routine lives came to a standstill in both the cities. The Gujranwala city was the worst affected due to the heavy rainfall and the excavation on GT Road for the construction of the metro bus route between Eminabad to Gakhar Mandi .
In Pakpattan, two minor children died and their mother sustained injuries when the roof of their house collapsed in the rain at Chak Dehwana, 33/SP.
Nasreen Bibi, a farm worker, used to work in the fields on a daily wage. When heavy rain began at noon, the family took shelter in one of the rooms of their dilapidated house but its roof collapsed.
Rescue sources confirmed that Noor Fatima (8) and Usman (6) died on the spot while their mother, Nasreen, was critically injured. In Lahore, four workers were injured after the roof of a factory collapsed near Band Road in the Gulshan-e-Ravi area.
Plastic bottles were being manufactured in the unit and four workers were present when the incident happened.
Rescue 1122 said four workers who got trapped under the debris were recovered with minor injuries. It said that the injured were provided first aid on the spot.
Heavy rain lashed several parts of Lahore. Nishtar Town recorded the highest rainfall at 84mm, followed by Johar Town with 51mm, the airport with 36mm, Kahna 34.4mm and Upper Mall with 33mm. Other areas where rainfall was recorded included Gulshan-i-Ravi (30mm), Samanabad (27mm), Head Office Gulberg (24mm), Laxmi Chowk (22mm), Iqbal Town (22mm), Pani Wala Talab (22mm), Jail Road (18mm), Saggian (18mm), Chowk Nakhuda (15mm), Tajpura (12mm), Farrukhabad (12mm), Shadipura (12mm), Mughalpura (10.2mm), Defence Road (6mm) and Manawan (5.2mm).
