THE Defence Housing Authority (DHA) area in Karachi is widely regarded as one of the most developed residential areas in the country. However, Phase VIII is facing a crisis; the complete absence of a water supply system. It is deeply troubling that despite the otherwise commendable development of Phase VIII, no proper water pipeline network has been laid in the area. Residents have modern homes, but they wake up every morning without access to clean water.

This gap in planning has given rise to a dangerous consequence, the unchecked rise of the tanker mafia. With no alternative available, residents are entirely at the mercy of private suppliers who charge exorbitant and arbitrary rates. There is no regulation, no accountability, and no relief. Families are forced to budget a significant portion of their income just to secure water, something that should be considered a basic right, not a luxury.

How can an authority responsible for one of Pakistan’s most prestigious housing schemes allow such a fundamental oversight? Area residents are not asking for something extraordinary, they are simply asking for water. The relevant authorities should immediately prioritise the laying of a proper water supply network in DHA Phase VIII. Additionally, strict action must be taken against the tanker mafia that is for long exploiting the residents. A housing scheme of this stature deserves infrastructure that matches its promise.
