KARACHI: A “notorious street criminal” was gunned down while two policemen were wounded in an alleged encounter in Shah Latif Town on Sunday, officials said.
They added that a police party on patrol saw a car with suspicious persons standing near Quaidabad.
When the police attempted to check the car, the suspects, who were armed, opened fire on them in order to avoid arrest.
As a result, two policemen, Ghulam Abbas, 40, and Zubair Ahmed, 38, sustained bullet wounds.
The suspects fled towards the Hascol petrol pump while carrying out firing. However, the policemen chased them and during the ensuing exchange of fire, one suspect identified as Shabbir, alias Chadana, was gunned down while his accomplice managed to escape.
The police seized a Toyota Corolla car, a pistol and mobile phones from them.
The injured policemen were taken to hospital.
The constable Abbas sustained a bullet injury in his abdomen but doctors said he was ‘stable’, according to a police spokesperson.
Another constable Zubair received a bullet wound on his hand and his condition was stated to be “out of danger”.
The police said that the slain suspect was a notorious criminal who could be seen in several CCTV footage committing street robberies.
There were at least seven FIRs registered against him at different police stations from 2003 to 2025.
The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities.
