QUETTA: The Young Doctors Association (YDA) on Monday announced that it would stage a protest sit-in near the Red Zone area in Quetta on Tuesday (today) if the government did not accept its demands within the next 12 hours.

The YDA protest has been ongoing for the past three weeks in support of Dr Mahnoor Nasir, who was seriously injured when a hospital employee threw acid on her.

The association warned the government that if force was used against the protesters, the young doctors would completely boycott medical services in hospitals.

Speaking at a press conference at the protest camp set up at Civil Hospital Quetta, YDA leaders Dr Abdul Hayee Baloch and Dr Bahar Shah said the Balochistan government had failed to seriously address their constitutional and legal demands despite the passage of 22 days.

They said a joint strategy had been devised under the Grand Doctors Alliance, with key demands including the removal of the health secretary and the medical superintendent of Civil Hospital. They alleged that a junior officer had been appointed to a senior position at the hospital and accused the health secretary of encouraging corruption instead of taking corrective action.
