KARACHI: The board of directors (BoD) of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has approved a Rs54.38 billion budget of the water utility for the financial year 2026-27.

According to a statement issued here on Monday, a major share of the budget has been allocated to improving the city’s water supply network, rehabilitating deteriorating sewerage lines and strengthening financial transparency through a fully digital SAP-based management system.

The budget also earmarks Rs2bn for employees’ liabilities and includes measures aimed at reducing debt, curbing corruption and enhancing service delivery.

The traditional manual accounting system has been replaced with SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), enabling real-time monitoring of expenditure, procurement and budget implementation.

The KWSC said strict financial controls had reduced employees’ outstanding liabilities from Rs4.8bn to Rs2.5bn, while contractors’ dues had declined from Rs4.5bn to Rs3bn.

A Rs2bn fixed fund has also been established to ensure timely payment of employees’ dues.

The board was informed that 73 employees drawing dual salaries and more than 100 pensioners receiving duplicate pensions had been identified during a financial review and their payments were stopped.

To improve sewerage services, 1,230 semi-skilled workers have been deployed across Karachi. The corporation has also introduced medical insurance for employees and pensioners and announced further recruitment to strengthen its finance and IT departments.
