ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said a vibrant, transparent and effective parliament is essential for democratic stability, constitutional supremacy and public welfare.

He expressed these views on International Day of Parliamentarism observed on June 30 under the auspices of the United Nations.

The speaker highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen committee roles and leverage modern technology for legislation that promotes social justice, economic prosperity and national cohesion, urging political stakeholders to foster cooperation n the national interest.

Mr Sadiq said parliament is the cornerstone of every democratic state and the true voice of the people’s aspirations. He said the supremacy of parliament is pivotal for democratic stability, constitutional supremacy, the rule of law and public confidence. A vibrant, transparent and effective Parliament, he said, lays the foundation for sustainable solutions to public issues and serves as the driving force behind national development.

The speaker stated that the National Assembly continues to play a proactive role in upholding democratic values, strengthening constitutional governance, promoting transparent legislation and ensuring effective parliamentary oversight. He observed that legislation is not merely about passing laws rather it is about building a comprehensive, effective and people-centric legal framework that advances public welfare, social justice, economic prosperity and national cohesion.

He stated that efforts were underway to further strengthen the role of parliamentary committees in order to make the legislative process more effective, transparent and result-oriented. Special emphasis, he noted, is being placed on harnessing modern technology, research, digital systems and institutional capacity-building to enhance the quality of legislation. The speaker stressed that in keeping with the demands of a rapidly changing world, parliament’s responsibilities extend beyond lawmaking. It must also hold the executive to account effectively and ensure that elected representatives faithfully champion the interests and aspirations of their respective constituencies. The speaker also urged all political stakeholders to rise above partisan differences in the larger national interest. He underscored the need to foster cooperation, tolerance, and constructive political dialogue to strengthen democracy and parliament. He said as an active member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the National Assembly continues to make meaningful contributions towards promoting democracy, human rights, the rule of law, political inclusion of women and youth, parliamentary diplomacy and sustainable development at the global level.

Senate chairman

Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in his message reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance, parliamentary supremacy, inclusiveness and public representation.

“The day marks the founding of the IPU in 1889 and serves as a reminder of the vital role parliaments play in promoting democracy, accountability, transparency, peace, and sustainable development worldwide,” he said.

Mr Gilani said strong parliamentary institutions are indispensable for addressing contemporary challenges, protecting citizens’ rights, ensuring effective governance, and strengthening public trust in democratic processes. He said parliaments serve as the voice of the people and provide an essential platform for dialogue, consensus-building, and national progress.

He highlighted the Senate’s continued efforts to promote democratic values, legislative excellence, inter-parliamentary cooperation, and meaningful public engagement. He said parliamentary diplomacy has become increasingly important in fostering international understanding, regional peace, and cooperation among nations.

Mr Gilani underscored the importance of enhancing the participation of women, youth and marginalised communities in democratic institutions, noting that inclusive representation is fundamental to a vibrant and resilient democracy.
