NEW YORK: The US Government has formally presented its deepest apologies to the Pakistan Government, Pakistan’s Repres­en­tative at the UN and Mrs Rahat Said Chhatari, Miss Chhatari and Mrs Farooq — three Pakistani ladies who were involved in the police incident in New Rochelle, New York on June 11. ... Ambassador Ernest A. Gross, Acting US Representative to the UN, has given assurances that the US Government ... will continue to make every effort to ensure that all appropriate privileges, immunities and courtesy are extended to members of delegations to the UN and members of their families.

“I am writing to you with reference to the unfortunate incident … of which you had ad­­vised the Secretary-General of the United Nations by a letter on June 13… . ... Inves­tig­ation has confirmed that Mrs Chhatari, her daughter and Mrs Farooq were taken into custody by the New Rochelle Police officers on June 11 as a result of a most regrettable misunderstanding and were not released until after they had been conducted to Police Headquarters, New Rochelle. … This action was wholly unwarranted... . ...[”]
