After a … meeting at 10-Downing Street with Home Secretary Roy Jenkins and a nine-man strong delegation of Asian community leaders, Mr Callaghan said he intended to be the prime minister of all the people. The statement released said: “There was a helpful discussion on all aspects of race relations in the course of which the Prime Minister reaffirmed the Government’s unqualified commitment to a policy of complete racial equality. [Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Washington,] last week’s riots in South Africa are casting a heavy shadow on the forthcoming talks between South African Premier John Vorster and US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger … informed sources said here… . They said the bloody clashes would make it very difficult to convince Vorster of the need of a joint US-South African move in the Rhodesian crisis. … The sources rejected speculation that Washington planned a military intervention in Rhodesia in case of major guerrilla warfare.
