Delayed justice

THE Sindh Labour Court in Hyderabad has been non-functional for the last couple of months as the position of presiding officer is lying vacant. This administrative vacuum has caused severe hardship to workers waiting for their cases — involving livelihood and fundamental rights — to be resolved. Although the Sindh Industrial Relations Act, 2013, requires that the cases be resolved within three months, numerous grievance applications and industrial disputes have remained unheard.

The continued inaction not only erodes workers’ confidence in the justice delivery system, but also defeats the very purpose of establishing specialised labour courts for expeditious resolution of disputes.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) should take immediate notice of the matter and issue necessary directions for the prompt posting of a presiding officer in Hyderabad so that the dispensation of justice may resume without further delay.
