Litigant shot dead on court premises

BAHAWALPUR: Panic gripped the Ahmedpur East Judicial Complex on Thursday when two assailants gunned down a litigant on its premises in broad daylight.

According to Ahmedpur East city police and Rescue 1122 officials, Mumtaz (55), along with his grandson Azhar Abbas and others had come from Mianwali to attend a court hearing of a case at the judicial complex.

As he disembarked from a car in the parking lot adjacent to the court, two unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire, leaving Mumtaz critically injured. The attackers managed to flee the scene on foot.

The firing created panic among lawyers, litigants and others present on the judicial complex’s premises, who ran for their lives.

The injured man later succumbed to his bullet wounds while being shifted to the THQ hospital by a Rescue 1122 team.

His body was moved to the hospital for the postmortem examination.

On receipt of information, a heavy contingent of police also reached the spot and collected evidence.

According to a police spokesperson, the two unidentified assailants fled the crime scene on foot, using a passage on the rear side of the parking lot and also snatched a motorcycle from one Shair Muhammad near the Government Girls Degree College, Ahmedpur East, to escape.

He said that city police have yet to register an FIR as they were awaiting the victim’s postmortem report. He added that the police are making efforts to arrest the killers.

BOOKED: Musafirkhana police have booked the prime suspect,Qari Ammar, and two others for allegedly torturing a boy to death at a madressah (seminary) on Wednesday.

The FIR No 453/26 was registered against the three suspects -- Qari Ammar, Amin and Nawaz -- who ran the seminary, under sections 302 and 34 of the PPC.

The complainant, Abdul Malik, stated in the FIR that his grandson Hasnain (12) was a student at the seminary.

He said the victim’s family was informed that the his grandson was at a clinicat Noorpur Pulli in a critical condition. When the family reached the clinic, Hasnain had already died, he added.

The complainant said that the three suspects tortured the boy to death for unknown reason, adding that the victim’s body carried torture marks.

The police arrested the three nominated suspects and handed the body over to the family after the postmortem examination.

The victim was laid to rest in the local graveyard after funeral prayers.
