BAJAUR: Provincial government on Tuesday distributed compensation cheques worth Rs570 million among heirs of 57 people killed and injured during the recent targeted operation in Lowi Mamund and War Mamund tehsils of Bajaur district.

The cheques were handed over at a ceremony held at the deputy commissioner’s office.

The deputy commissioner, Shahid Ali Khan, PTI MPA Dr Hamidur Rehman and Nawagai sub-division assistant commissioner Irshadul Haq attended the event along with family members of the victims.

According to officials, Rs10 million were given to heirs of each deceased, while Rs2.5 million were awarded to each injured person. The cheques were jointly distributed by Mr Khan and Dr Rehman.

Speaking at the ceremony, the deputy commissioner said this was the first phase of compensation for victims of the recent operation in Lowi and War Mamund tehsils.

He said that 57 cases of deaths and injuries had been confirmed in this phase, while remaining cases had been sent to the provincial government for approval, which was expected soon.

He said the compensation amounts were in line with the provincial government’s policy for people affected by security operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Mr Khan further told the gathering that the provincial government would also compensate owners of houses and other infrastructure damaged during the operation.

“The survey of damaged houses and infrastructure is under way and compensation will be provided once it is completed,” he said, adding that the district administration was making all-out efforts to ensure affected families could rebuild their homes quickly.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Hamidur Rehman, MPA from Lowi and War Mamund, said nothing could compensate for the loss of lives. “These cheques cannot make up for those martyred or injured, but they are a gesture of sympathy and financial assistance from the provincial government,” he noted.
