KARACHI: A 26-year-old man tested positive for mpox – the third case of the viral infection in as many days – on Monday, raising the tally to 37 in the province.
Sources said the patient, a resident of DHA and a guard by profession, had no foreign travel history.
He is currently under treatment at the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital & Research Centre (SIDH&RC). It’s the ninth mpox case at the facility and 12th in the city.
“I think it’s only increasing awareness about the infection that patients are now reporting at hospitals,” shared a senior doctor at the SIDH&RC, adding that stigma attached with the disease discouraged patients seeking early medical care.
Earlier, a 40-year-old man, a resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and a 35-year-old man, a resident of Landhi, with no foreign travel history, tested positive.
At least nine deaths from the infection have been reported this year in the province.
In April, an outbreak of mpox, which was earlier restricted to patients with history of foreign travel, was reported from Khairpur, claiming multiple lives of newborns.
