SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: The Tojikhel tribe in Kari Kot area of Wana tehsil, Lower South Waziristan, on Friday announced its full support and solidarity with tribal elder Malik Jameel Wazir following a recent armed attack on him.
Tribal leaders also decided to immediately organise a lashkar (tribal force) for the protection of the area and the community amid growing security concerns.
Police said announcements were made through various mosques in Kari Kot, calling on members of the Tojikhel tribe to assemble and participate in decisions concerning the tribe’s security and the maintenance of peace in the region.
The announcements stated that resolutions adopted by tribal elders and the local jirga must be implemented without delay. Those found violating collective tribal decisions could face strict penalties under customary tribal regulations.
DSP Wana circle Asghar Ali Shah said that practical steps had already been initiated to raise a 600-member tribal lashkar in support of Malik Jameel Wazir. He said tribal elders and community representatives were engaged in consultations to formulate a strategy for ensuring security and protecting local residents from rising militant threats.
The development came a day after unidentified armed men reportedly opened fire on Malik Jameel Wazir near Kari Kot Bazaar while he was returning home from Wana Bazaar On Thursday. According to local sources, two assailants riding on a motorcycle targeted his vehicle. However, Malik Jameel and his companions responded with return fire, forcing the attackers to flee. A motorcycle allegedly belonging to the attackers was reportedly seized during the incident.
DSP Asghar Ali Shah said the attack followed the killing of two of Malik Jameel Wazir’s sons, who were shot dead by armed assailants while travelling on a motorcycle near the same location several days ago. According to police records, Malik Jameel has lost four sons in separate incidents over the years, a fact that has intensified anger and concern among members of the tribe.
Police officials further disclosed that Malik Jameel had previously survived an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on the Wana-Kari Kot Road last year. Although he was injured in the blast, he escaped with his life.
Residents say the overall security situation in South Waziristan Lower has deteriorated significantly over the past one and a half years, generating widespread concern among local residents.
PROTEST: Players, youth, activists and local residents on Friday staged a protest rally in Rustam Bazaar, Wana, demanding immediate and safe recovery of renowned footballer Sabeel Noor Wazir, who was allegedly abducted by unidentified armed men earlier this week.
A large number of sportsmen and members of civil society participated in the demonstration, chanting slogans and calling upon the authorities to ensure the footballer’s swift and unconditional release.
Addressing the gathering, speakers expressed grave concern over the reported abduction of Sabeel Noor Wazir, describing young athletes as valuable assets of the region whose safety and security must be guaranteed under all circumstances.
