TOBA TEK SINGH: A man and his son were allegedly murdered by three brothers and their six accomplices over a minor scuffle on Wednesday night in Chak 102 JB Burj Mandi of Chak Jhumra tehsil.
Complaint Riffat Shahbaz claimed in her FIR, registered by the Chak Jhumra Police, that to take revenge of the exchange of harsh words and a minor scuffle, brothers Rizwan, Farman and Zaman with their accomplices attacked her house and opened indiscriminate fire. She claimed that her husband Shahbaz and son Haider sustained bullet injuries. They were being shifted to the Allied Hospital when Shahbaz succumbed to his injuries on the way, while Haider also died at the hospital.
Police claimed to have arrested two accused brothers Rizwan and Farman and raids were underway to arrest the others.
POISONOUS FOOD: The police have arrested two employees of a local restaurant in the Kokianwala locality of Faisalabad after five members of a family allegedly fell ill after eating biryani in which a dead lizard was found.
The Razaabad Police said the victims included the head of the family, factory worker Bilal, his wife Samina, Maryam (4), Dua (6) and Faizan (8). Police said the victims’ stomachs were washed at the Ghulam Muhammadabad General Hospital and later they were referred to the Allied Hospital, where Faizan’s condition was not improving.
RAIDS: A Customs Intelligence Enforcement team raided and recovered a non-custom paid Mercedes Benz worth about Rs30 million from Faisal Town on the Canal Road in Faisalabad on Thursday.
A press release said that it also seized a Toyota Prius worth about Rs7 million from the D-Ground Market. It added that another team raided a warehouse located in Hajveri Town and recovered about 10,200 kilograms of polyester stretchable suiting fabric. The apparent value of the goods was about Rs30 million.
Collector Taimur Kamal said that legal action was underway against the owners.
VISIT: A three-member delegation from the Canadian High Commission, Islamabad visited the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) to discuss different areas of collaboration and gain insights into the university’s contributions to agricultural research, agritech development and innovation.
The delegation comprised Harriet Roos, Head of Cooperation; Nikita Eriksen-Hamel, Deputy Director Food Security and Nutrition/Agriculture Specialist; and Farida Rehmat Gilani, Senior Development Officer. They held a meeting with the VC, deans and directors and discussed research, academia, agriculture, seed, startup ecosystem, soil fertility, animal and veterinary sciences.
Ms Roos said that in line with Canada’s own shifting policy priorities, they were looking for opportunities to better align their work with Pakistan for mutual economic and cooperation opportunities. Agriculture and agro-food would be a great place to start, she added.
VC Dr Zulfiqar Ali highlighted UAF’s ongoing efforts in agricultural research, climate-smart farming, technology transfer, entrepreneurship development, and industry-academia linkages. He said that seed, animal feed,fertilisers, vaccines and machinery were some of the key areas from which partnership with Canadian institutions should be enhanced. He stressed upon the need to revive the joint degree programme.
Nikita Eriksen-Hamel said that there were a number of Canadian agri-food innovation networks that were being established.
CLEAN WATER: Punjab Local Government and Community Development Secretary Mian Shakeel Ahmed has announced that a comprehensive water supply scheme for Toba has been incorporated in the Punjab Development Programme (PDP) and planning for this project is underway to ensure the provision of clean drinking water to the citizens.
Talking to media on Thursday during a visit, he said that the PDP would serve as a major milestone in the provision of modern and sustainable urban infrastructure across the province.
DC Umar Mala informed the secretary that work on the rehabilitation and construction of 209 kilometres of sewerage lines, installation of 4,215 manhole covers and development of 11.15 kilometres of storm-water drainage infrastructure were underway. Moreover, rehabilitation of 195 kilometres of streets, restoration of 12 public parks, establishment of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 16.25 million gallons per day, solarisation initiatives, rehabilitation of three disposal stations and construction of three new disposal stations was also ongoing.
CHAMPIONSHIP: The Commissioner Cup Inter-District Faisalabad Division Archery Championship organised by the Divisional Sports Department has concluded on Thursday.
The competition was won by Jhang while Faisalabad secured the second position. More than 100 players from all four districts participated and showed their archery skills at the competition.
CAUGHT: A sub-engineer of the Mian Channu Irrigation department was arrested by the anti-corruption establishment (ACE) for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs50,000.
An ACE official said that a Khanewal ACE team, under the supervision of Judicial Magistrate Sohail Anjum, raided and arrested accused Saifullah along with recovering marked currency notes from his custody.
The operation was carried out by a team led by Circle Officer Sajid Ali on a farmer’s complaint, who accused the official of demanding a bribe for providing water supply for his farmland through the area water channel.
