ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Thursday visited the Directorate General of Pakistan Post and urged comprehensive reforms in the organisation.
Presiding over a high-level meeting to review the organization’s performance, financial health, and future strategy, the minister emphasised the urgent need for comprehensive reforms, restructuring, and modernization.
He directed the Pakistan Post to formulate a practical three year business plan aimed at achieving financial self-sufficiency and reducing the burden on the national exchequer. “Pakistan Post must adapt to changing market demands and competitive environments,” he said, adding that: “We must abandon outdated practices and adopt an efficient, modern working model to transform this historic institution into a profitable entity aligned with public needs.”
Federal minister highlighted that the future of Pakistan Post depends entirely on tangible performance improvements.
He stressed that the organization’s 20,000 employees must play a proactive role in securing its survival and progress. “We have to bring it on par with the counterpart international organisations,” he said.
To drive this transformation, the minister directed the newly appointed director general to address past weaknesses and present a clear, actionable reform roadmap within three months.
He also instructed the authorities to enhance private sector participation and explore outsourcing various functions.
Warning of severe consequences if annual losses are not curtailed, Aleem Khan said: “If the institution fails to achieve financial independence, sustaining it will become untenable. If no improvement is seen, the government may be compelled to consider alternative options, including privatisation. This is a final warning; there is no further room for delay or negligence.”
The minister announced a follow-up meeting in one week to review progress and demanded an immediate implementation report on the initial reform measures.
The high-level meeting was attended by the federal secretary for communications and senior officials of Pakistan Post.
The Director General of Pakistan Post, retired Squadron Leader Maqsood Ahmed, provided a detailed briefing on the organization’s current operational and financial status.
