PESHAWAR: Provincial minister for local government and rural development Mina Khan Afridi on Wednesday inaugurated two projects to replace old water supply pipelines and install modern reinforced plastic composite (RPC) manhole covers in Peshawar.
The projects have been initiated under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s Peshawar revitalisation plan.
Both projects will be completed within a year, according to a statement issued here on Wednesday. The water supply distribution network replacement project will be implemented at a cost of Rs1.14 billion, while the manhole covers installation project will cost Rs125.790 million.
Under the projects, 212 kilometres of water supply lines will be replaced across the city, while 9,561 manholes will be fitted with modern RPC covers capable of bearing loads ranging from two to 15 tons.
Secretary Local Government Zafarul Islam, Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar CEO Yasir Ali Khan, and other officials were also present on the occasion.
Upon completion, the water line replacement project will ensure an adequate supply of clean drinking water, eliminate leakage and illegal connections, protect water from contamination, reduce operational costs, and address low water pressure issues faced by tail-end consumers.
Speaking on the occasion, Mina Khan Afridi said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had launched Rs200 billion worth of projects under the Peshawar revitalisation plan. These projects relate to water supply, irrigation, flyovers, underpasses, and other sectors.
He stated that the replacement of rusted pipelines is being carried out on a priority basis, while attention is also being given to infrastructure development.
The minister announced that projects worth Rs13 billion related to flyovers, roads, drains, and other sectors would also be launched.
