KARACHI: Lyari areas submerged with sewage
KARACHI, July 8: The residents of Fida Hussain Sheikha Road, Daryabad and Nawabad areas of Lyari are infected with water-borne diseases as they have to consume water contaminated by overflowing sewerage drains.
Since no cleaning has been undertaken of a main sewerage drain, it continues to overflow submerging the entire area from Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Road to Kumaila Stop and Hamza Mosque with sewage.
Water supply lines are obsolete due to which sewage gets mixed with water causing several diseases among the residents.
Young Lyari Welfare Centre President Abdul Majeed Memon said that Lyariites always faced problems like water shortage, electricity outage, sewerage, health, sanitation, dilapidated roads, education and unemployment etc.
He said that owing to ill planning the sewerage system had failed. Even the cleaning of drains was not being carried out that caused choking of old lines and amassment of filthy water on streets.
According to him, not only the department concerned has been informed about it but town office and councillors also know the whole situation but this serious problem still remains neglected.
The welfare centre appealed to Sindh Chief Minster Arbab Rahim, Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, Town Nazim Malik Muhammad Fayyaz, water board and media to get this problem solved.
Earlier on Friday the residents of Shah Abdul Latif Road, Lyari took to streets and staged a protest demonstration against apathy of Lyari Town administration and demanded dismissal of the town and UC-6 nazims.
Holding placards and banners, the protesters raised slogans against the town administration for its failure in solving sewerage problems of the locality. They also set ablaze tyres and blocked road during the protest.
The residents said they had been facing hardship for two months due to the worst condition of sewerage lines in their locality and in this regard had lodged several complaints with the town nazim office.
They said the town and UC nazims assured them of solving the problem within five days but even after a lapse one and a half months the situation remained unchanged.
According to the protesting residents, sewage accumulated on streets, in front of mosques and shops had paralysed their routine life and caused outbreak of malaria and other diseases.
They urged the governor, chief minister and city nazim to look into the matter and immediately dismiss the town and UC-6 nazims.
