PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto has declared that he was committed to democracy and his principles and policies were unwavering. Talking to newsmen at Peshawar airport … [he] referred to the statement made by Pir Pagaro, President of the PML, at Lahore yesterday [June 5], and described it as “a total lie”. Mr Bhutto said that he had never been averse to democracy nor were his principles compromising.

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from London,] An 18-year-old Sikh, Gurdip Chaggar, was fatally stabbed early yesterday [June 5] in a fight between young whites and Asians in a London suburb, Police said. Another young Asian stabbed in the back, was allowed to leave hospital after treatment. He was not named. Police stressed that they did not see the killing as a “race war”, incited in the largely Asian West London suburb of Southall. … A welfare Officer of the Goan Overseas Association … appealed to members of the Asian community not to react violently to the killing. “All hell could break loose if Asians decide to retaliate”, he warned. … In many parts of Southall the Asian community makes up 70 or 80 per cent of the population.
