Girl killed as house wall collapses in sandstorm

BAHAWALPUR: A girl died, while at least five other persons, including women and children, suffered injuries in different incidents as a sandstorm lashed Bahawalpur district on Thursday night.

During the storm, high-velocity winds lashed the city and other parts of the district, damaging mango orchards in the area.

Because of the strong winds, the boundary walls of many mud houses collapsed in the rural areas and trees were uprooted. The winds also blew away solar plates installed on rooftops of buildings, besides disrupting power supply to many areas for several hours.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, a girl, Allah Wasai (15) died when the wall of her house collapsed at Basti Nazearabad near Channan Pir in Yazman tehsil.

Meanwhile, they said, five persons, including a woman, Ms Rubina, suffered injuries in two roof collapse incidents -- at Ghani Goth and near KLP Road. The injured persons were rendered first aid on the spot.

According to the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco), several feeders in Bahawalpur district tripped due to the windstorm on Thursday night.

Mepco claims that most of these feeders have been restored.

HARASSERS HELD: Dunyapur city police in Lodhran district claimed to have arrested five suspects for allegedly harassing a girl, torturing her and snatching her mobile phone near Bhatti Colony.

According to the police, the complainant girl, ‘M’,an employee at a private clinic, stated that she was returning home from her workplace when the suspects -- Tariq, Ahmed, Shakil, Owais and Kashif -- allegedly intercepted her.

She alleged that they subjected her to torture, snatched her mobile phone and threatened her of dire consequences, if she reported the incident to police.

According to the complainant, the suspects had been forcing her to develop relations with them and on her refusal, they would frequently chased and harassed her.

Acting on the complaint, the police arrested all suspects.
