SAHIWAL: Islam Shah Khagga, Pakpattan tehsil President of Peoples Youth Wing, was brutally murdered in an alleged honor-related attack at his home in village Sadoo Piplee Shah Khaggay, during the night between May 30 and 31.
His wife Aneela Bibi, mother Amin Bibi, and father Rafiq Shah sustained critical injuries in the attack.
Reports said around 12 armed men, mostly from his in-laws’ side, stormed the house.
They locked the doors from inside and subjected four members family to brutal torture before shooting Islam Shah.
Police term the incident honour killing case
Witnesses stated that none of the neighbours dared to intervene during the attack.
Pakpattan Sadar police registered a case under PPC Sections 302, 324, 365, 511, 460, 148, and 149 against Mumtaz Shah Khagga (father-in-law and alleged ringleader) and others. The complaint was lodged by Rafiq Shah, father of the deceased.
District Police Officer Javed Chadhar, speaking to Dawn, said it was an honor-killing case and Section 311 PPC had been added to the FIR.
He said the case had been handed over to the Crime Control Department (CCD), Pakpattan.
Reports suggest that five months earlier, Islam Shah and Aneela contracted love marriage in court, which was strongly opposed by Aneela’s family and Khagga community.
Despite attempts to resolve the matter through Panchayat meetings, proposal of a watta satta (exchange marriage), the settlement was never implemented. The Panchayat wanted Islam Shah to marry his sister to Aneela’s brother.
Eyewitnesses reported that Aneela Bibi’s arms and legs were broken with axes during the attack. She was said to be pregnant.
PPP: Former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party Central Punjab President Raja Pervez Ashraf strongly condemned the brutal murder of Islam Shah and demanded immediate arrest and conviction of those involved in the killing.
In a statement, he criticised the police for not responding quickly. Responding to the criticism, the DPO categorically denied any delay.
