TAXILA: The Punjab government has approved a development programme worth Rs135 million aimed at strengthening and modernising healthcare services across the Hazro tehsil of Attock.

This was stated by former provincial minister and member District Monitoring Committee Jahangir Khanzada while talking to newsmen at the inaugural ceremony of a project to revamp Basic Health Unit Shadi Khan in Hazro on Saturday.

He said the plan was designed to enhance the capacity and quality of healthcare delivery at the grassroots level, ensuring that residents received better treatment without having to travel long distances.

He said under the programme, six BHUs and one Rural Health Centre (RHC) in Hazro will be upgraded and equipped with improved facilities, modern medical equipment and enhanced service structures.

According to Mr Khanzada, each BHU will be upgraded at a cost of Rs15 million, while the RHC will receive Rs45 million for renovation and improvement. He said the BHUs located at Jatyal, Haroon, Khakwani, Bhangi, Kamra and Shamshabad along with the Rural Health Centre at Ghourghushti had been included in the revamping project which would be completed in the next fiscal year.

He stated that the initiative would significantly improve access to healthcare, particularly for low-income families, and help move towards more inclusive health coverage across the tehsil.

The objective, he added, is to ensure that essential health services are available at the community level, especially in remote and under-served areas.

Describing the programme as a step toward strengthening public healthcare infrastructure, he said the government was committed to improving service delivery standards and expanding access to quality treatment for all citizens.

Responding to questions, he added that under the direction of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the provincial government was prioritising healthcare reforms with a special focus on maternal and child health, particularly in rural regions where facilities are limited.
