NAROWAL: A 500,000 gallon underground water tank will be constructed by June 30 to protect Narowal city from heavy rains and floods with Rs65 million.

Narowal Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Tayyab Khan told Dawn that on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, work was underway to construct a large underground water tank to protect citizens from heavy rains and floods.

He said that during the rainy season, rainwater accumulated in Old Court, Passport Office Road, City Police Station Road, Mohalla Islampura, Khawajagan, Abid Town, Amin Colony and other areas. Due to a lack of proper drainage, rainwater used to accumulate on the streets and roads for 12 to 24 hours, he added.

He said that according to the survey of the technical engineering team, the underground water tank was being constructed in the premises of Women and Children IT Learning Park opposite the passport office in Narowal.

The DC said that the length of the water tank would be 151 feet, width 78 feet and depth 12 feet. He said that the tank would hold 500,000 gallons and three water pumps would also be installed. He said that a special two-kilometer long water pipeline would be built from the tank to the Ganj Hussainabad rain drain. He said the pumps would start dumping water into the drain when the underground water tank reaches its full capacity.

Mr Tayyab said the tank would cost Rs65 million and construction work was ongoing day and night with the project expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.

He said that quality material and quality of work were being ensured and this project was a big gift for the citizens of Narowal by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
