DERA GHAZI KHAN: A joint team of the Allama Iqbal Teaching Hospital and Medical College, acting on the orders of the Lahore High Court, visited Nangar, an area in Choti Bala and organised a silicosis camp.
The affected patients were medically examined and their data was collected. The medical unit head, Prof Dr Haroon Bilal, reported that between 2011 and 2012, several residents of the area had worked in marble factories in Lahore. For not using protective masks, many of them contracted the deadly silicosis and the majority have since lost their lives.
Dr Bilal further stated that the record of all affected individuals was being compiled and a comprehensive report would soon be sent to the government to ensure future action and possible relief measures.
At the camp, Prof Dr Nasser Javed, Dr Ali Hashim, and other specialists conducted medical examinations of the patients and provided them screening, counselling, and guidance.
The authorities expressed their commitment to continue efforts for the diagnosis, treatment, and support of those affected by silicosis.
