GUJRAT: The much-awaited Servis Mor flyover along the old GT Road has finally been opened to traffic on Wednesday after the lapse of almost three years as its construction was launched in August 2022.

Punjab Industries, Commerce and Investment Minister Chaudhary Shafay Hussain and Gujrat Deputy Commissioner Noorul Ain Qureshi inaugurated the project.

The project was approved and initiated by the PTI government in Punjab on the recommendation of then MNA Chaudhry Moonis Elahi in August 2022, but the construction was halted by the caretaker Punjab government in February 2023. It was resumed by incumbent Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz after changing the design by adding a loop towards Islamabad, connecting the old GT Road with the Gujrat Bypass.

However, due to the change and the delay, the cost of the project was increased by almost 50 percent but locals still complain that the flyover lacks a loop going towards Lahore. As per its original design, there was no loop towards Lahore and Islamabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Shafay Hussain said that improved infrastructure promotes economic activity and public convenience. He stated that under the vision of the Punjab government, road infrastructure across the province had been upgraded through multibillion rupee development projects.

The minister said that several development schemes were underway in Gujrat at a fast pace and he credited the present government for completing the Servis Mor flyover project. He criticised the previous administration before the caretaker setup, alleging that only 20 percent work on the project had been completed in four years, while the current government completed 80 percent work within two and a half years.

He also directed the authorities to install lights and cameras on the flyover at the earliest.

Mr Hussain said the government was working day and night for the development of Gujrat and added that under the leadership of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the city would be transformed into a model district in terms of development.

He said that efforts were also underway to improve the city’s sewage system to resolve the long-standing sanitation issues.

The minister urged citizens to help maintain cleanliness and remain vigilant against elements causing blockages in drainage lines by dumping waste.

A large number of people attended the inauguration ceremony and warmly welcomed the provincial minister on his arrival in Gujrat.

Citizens also expressed appreciation over the completion of the flyover project.
