Woman, two children drown in ‘suicide incident’

HYDERABAD: A woman allegedly jumped into the Phulelli Canal along with her two children in, what is claimed to be, “a suicide incident” in Tando Mohammad Khan on Friday.

The area police and residents of the neighbourhood said that the woman, Shirimati Ratna, jumped into the canal along with her eight-year-old son, Vishal, and seven-year-old daughter, Aasha.

Her husband, Mr Harichand, told local journalists that she had been under immense stress after a quarrel involving their and some other children living in the neighbourhood. He denied that he and his wife had strained relationship. However, her mother, Shrimati Zoopi, claimed that the couple had been quarrelling at times over different issues, including poverty.

The bodies were fished out by Rescue-1122 personnel and some volunteers.

The woman’s body was transported by a grass-laden vehicle and that of her son by an auto-rickshow to the District Headquarters Hospital. The third body was taken to the hospital by the Rescue-1122 staff.

Shrimati Ratna was a resident of Lakhat, an area located about 10 kilometres from Tando Mohammad Khan town while Mr Harichand belongs to Tando Allahyar.

SHO Manzoor Shoro of the B-Section police station said that the bodies were handed over to heirs after legal formalities.
