THATTA: Sindh Minister for Works, Services and Prisons Ali Hassan Zardari on Friday performed the groundbreaking of ‘Thatta Lawyers Housing Society’ at a ceremony held here on Friday.

The programme was attended by several political leaders and elite of the area, besides leaders and members of the legal fraternity.

Mr Zardari congratulated the fraternity on the launch of the scheme, and announced that development work on it would be completed within the next three months. He held out the assurance that plots

would be allotted to members of the Thatta’s legal fraternity soon after completion of the development work.

Addressing members of the Thatta District Bar Association, Mr Zardari said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had always pursued people-centric politics and played a historic role in the restoration of democracy in the country.

He noted that the legal fraternity stood shoulder to shoulder with the PPP during movements for the democracy and its struggle for people’s constitutional rights.

He said that a housing scheme for legal fraternity had been a longstanding demand of practising lawyers of this district.

He said the scheme would have all modern residential facilities as well as proper security its inhabitants. It would also contribute to urban development and give a boost to economic activity in the region, he added.

Speaking about prison reforms, Mr Zardari said prisoners were also human beings and they were entitled to all basic rights and dignified treatment.

“Every possible facility is being provided to inmates in Sindh’s prisons,” he said.

He pointed out that the provincial government had provided more than 40 vehicles, ambulances and motorcycles to the prisons department in order to improve the transportation and emergency response, besides administrative efficiency.

Commenting on the political situation in the province, the minister said electoral alliances against the PPP used to emerge in election seasons, all of them had failed to change the province’s political landscape.

“People enjoyed their right to participate in politics, but the anti-PPP alliances had been rejected by the public at large,” he remarked.

Earlier, the minister inaugurated the Water Supply-II Project for Thatta city.

Officials said the initiative was aimed at addressing the chronic shortage of clean drinking water and improving water supply services for local residents.

A large number of lawyers, party workers and representatives of civil society attended the event.

Prominent among them were Sadiq Ali Memon, Syed Riaz Hussain Shah Shirazi, Abdul Hameed Panhwar, Ashique Hassan Zardari and Shahnawaz Lohar.
