EU-Pakistan partnership in trade, diplomacy highlighted
ISLAMABAD: The Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Pakistan Raimundas Karoblis highlighted EU-Pakistan partnership in trade, diplomacy and sustainable development during a reception to commemorate Europe Day at the EU Residence in Islamabad.
The event brought together government representatives, members of the diplomatic community, civil society, media and partners and friends of the EU.
The evening began with live performances of the anthems of the EU and Pakistan by Pakistani musicians, with Kamran Rahi on the tabla, Mohammad Salman Adil playing the flute, and Mohammad Arslan Nizami on the sitar.
“Seventy-four years ago, the Schuman Declaration laid the foundation for the EU, a bold vision transforming the ruins of war into a union of peace, solidarity and shared prosperity,” he said.
“Today, that vision guides us as we tackle global challenges, from climate change to economic instability, geopolitical tensions to digital transformation.”
He added, “Our partnership with Pakistan reflects this belief. Through trade, investment, education and development, we foster prosperity and cooperation. Last week’s EU-Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad highlighted our economic potential, aligning with the EU Global Gateway strategy. As Pakistan’s largest trading partner and top export destination, we are committed to deepening ties, creating jobs, driving innovation and supporting sustainable growth. The continuation of GSP+ preferences is key and we will work with Pakistan’s government to secure their continuation.”
Ambassador Karoblis said, “Yet our bond goes beyond economics. It is rooted in shared values and dialogue as the path to peace. I commend the leadership of Pakistan for its constructive role in mediating between the US and Iran. In a divided world, your commitment to diplomacy is both necessary and commendable. This is Europe’s and Pakistan’s moment, a moment of resilience, democracy and shaping a better world together.”
Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari graced the occasion as a testament to Pakistan’s commitment to continuing positive and mutually beneficial cooperation with the European Union.
“It is my pleasure to be here today to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Europe Day. I extend my heartiest felicitations to the European Union and Europeans around the world,” he said. He added, “Pakistan highly values its bilateral relationship with the EU as an equal partner, sharing common views on issues including democracy, multilateralism, free trade, and combating climate change.”
Concluding his remarks, Minister Leghari said, “Pakistan remains committed to further strengthening its partnership with the EU for the mutual benefit of our people.” A Europe Day cake featuring the EU flag was ceremonially cut, followed by interactive activities including a photo corner, EU-themed games, and digital screens showcasing the EU-Pakistan partnership in trade, climate action, skills development, and renewable energy under the broader Global Gateway initiative.
