Bronze winners treated unfairly

KARACHI, July 2: It’s a good omen that the government has been rewarding the international medal winning athletes with cash and kind but one has failed to understand the logic the behind step-motherly treatment that was meted out to the bronze medallist sportspersons in Islamabad the other day.

The recipients of gold and silver medals at different international competitions in the recent past were given cash awards by Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s secretariat.

On the other hand, the bronze medallists were handed over cheques by sports minister at the Pakistan Sports Board.

The PSB through a letter dated June 26 had invited sportspersons of athletics, golf, squash, swimming, table tennis, boxing and sailing at Islamabad.

One has failed to understand as to why the bronze medal winners were not invited to the PM house.

It is pertinent to mention that president General Pervez Musharraf personally visited KPT sports complex in Karachi to present an hefty cash reward to pugilist Mehrullah on his feat.
