Israel renews attacks on Lebanon despite truce

BEIRUT: Israel renewed attacks on southern Lebanon on Sunday despite an ongoing ceasefire, launching air strikes and shelling across multiple villages that killed 14 people, including two women and two children, and caused damage to civilian and religious sites.

According to Lebanon’s health ministry, at least 37 people were also wounded in the latest attacks.

Lebanon’s National News Agency said Israeli warplanes “launched a strike” in Kfar Tibnit, one of several targeted villages, causing casualties.

In Zawtar al-Sharqiyah, another of the affected areas, an Israeli strike destroyed a mosque and another religious building. The agency had earlier reported that an Israeli “drone hit a motorcycle” in the same village.

Shelling was also reported in several border villages, according to the agency.

AFP correspondents said they saw clouds of gray smoke rising over Nabatieh al-Fawqa and other locations following the strikes.

Under the terms of the truce, which was recently extended, Israel maintains it has the right to respond to “planned, imminent or ongoing attacks” and has carried out near-daily strikes in southern Lebanon.

“This means freedom of action not only to respond to attacks ... but also to pre-empt immediate threats and even emerging threats,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
