Search on for boy feared drowned in water channel

KARACHI: Rescue workers on the second consecutive day on Saturday continued search for a minor boy feared to have drowned in an uncovered water line of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation in Scheme-33 a day before, said rescue services officials.

The 11-year-old boy, Zahid Mohammed Khan, was swept away around 2pm on Friday while swimming in the water channel.

Lifeguards of the Rescue-1122 and Edhi Foundation continued search for the boy till Friday night but could not find him. Subsequently, the operation was stopped due to darkness. The operation resumed on Saturday morning.

Rescue-1122 spokesperson Hassaan Ul Haseeb Khan told Dawn that they continued the search at two separate locations near Samama Shopping Mall and Continental Bakery in Gulistan-i-Jauhar with local administration but till late evening, the boy could not be found.

He said that three or four similar incidents had occurred in the same vicinity in Scheme-33 in the recent past and the bodies of those who had drowned were recovered at locations where the KWSC had installed iron grills to prevent objects from flowing away.

The Rescue official said that the water’s rapid flow may have taken the boy further.
