MALAKAND: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) on Friday announced that it would hold protests against unannounced power cuts across Malakand Division on April 24.

During a news conference here, JI Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (North) president Inayatullah Khan said the province generated surplus electricity but the hydel power produced for one and a half rupees per unit was being sold back for Rs93 per unit.

He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa produced cheap electricity but its residents were facing prolonged power cuts.

Mr Khan said that his party would hold protest demonstrations on April 24 in all districts of the division against unscheduled power outages and the collection of Rs900 per month from residents in the name of meter rent.

He urged the people to participate in the protest in large numbers.

JI deputy emir Syed Bakhtiar Maani, general secretary Haleem Bacha and other leaders were also present.

Meanwhile, gunmen killed a young man and dumped his body near the Swat River in the Tarei area here.

Levies personnel, along with rescue workers, shifted the body to the headquarters hospital in Batkhela. It was later handed over to the family.

The deceased was identified as Sudais Khan, a resident of Lower Dir district.

Also, a man was killed after being hit by a car in the limits of the Pul Chowki police station.

The Levies personnel arrested the car driver. The deceased was identified as Zohaib, a resident of Upper Dir district.
