LARKANA, June 28: A complete strike was observed in Nasirabad (Qambar-Shahdadkot district) against the taluka council’s decision of imposing tax on selling fish and giving this business on contract.
Led by citizen action committee president Rasool Bakhsh Khoso, Murtaza Chandio and Karim Bakhsh Shaikh, a procession also was taken out from the Noonari locality on Tuesday.
Protesters chanting slogans assembled outside the taluka council office where the council was in session. Later, they marched to the Fazul Rahoo Chowk and staged a rally. The citizen action committee had given a call of protest.
They alleged that the taluka council against the will of people had granted contract and monopolized tax imposition on selling fish in the market.
The contractor, they claimed, was charging Rs20 per kilogram on fish, which had increased it prices.
The tax rate on selling fish in Mehar and other adjoining areas was very low, they said and threatened the taluka council to block the Indus Highway on July 1, if the authority did not withdraw the tax and cancel the contract.
Meanwhile, the taluka council of Nasirabad, in its session on Tuesday, deferred to confirm the fish and meat contracts.
Taluka nazim Khalid Hussain Tunio said the council would send recommendation to the Sindh for withdrawing the tax and cancelling the contract.
