The US is prepared to impose and sustain a naval blockade on Iran, but has not yet set out rules of engagement for dealing with any violations, a US official tells Al Jazeera.

The official adds that the US has sufficient forces and equipment to enforce a blockade and that it would be maintained for however long it takes, in line with decisions made by President Donald Trump.
