RAWALPINDI, June 27: Top seed Asim Shafik advanced to the second round of the first Shalimar Club Open Tennis Championship with a straightforward victory over Naumanul Haq on Tuesday.

Asim scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory on the clay courts after Monday's second day was washed out because of rain.

Other first round winners were Ali Abdullah who knocked out Asif Ali 6-2, 6-1 and Ikramul Haq, a 6-1, 6-0 winner against Umar.

In the boys' under-17 category, top seed Sadanul Haq was an easy 8-2 second round victor against Zunair Ansari while in the under-15 age group he outplayed Haris Saifullah 8-1.

Jibranul Haq, also competing in the under-15s defeated Obaid Khan Khattak 8-1 in a second round match.

Men's singles (first round): Asim Shafik bt Naumanul Haq 6-2, 6-3, Ali Abdullah bt Asif Ali 6-2, 6-1, Ikramul Haq bt Umar 6-1, 6-0

Junior under-17 singles (second round): Nasir Mahmood bt Zulfiqar Ahmed 8-6, Talha Asif Dar bt Suleman Rafiq 8-2, Abid Ali bt Muhammad Ali 8-1, Sadanul Haq bt Zunair Ansari 8-2.

Boys' under-15 singles (second round): Sadanul Haq bt Haris Saifullah 8-1, Jibranul Haq bt Obaid Khan Khattak 8-1, Salar Ahmed bt Ahad Amir 9-8 (2), Ahmed Chaudhry bt Basit 8-3, Bilal Mushtaq bt Rehman 8-5
