US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George to step down and take immediate retirement, sources familiar with the decision tell CBS News. 

One of the sources says Hegseth wants someone in the role who will implement his and President Donald Trump’s vision for the US Army. 

A senior War Department official tells CBS News, “We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army.”
