SUKKUR: A grand jirga (tribal court) settled a 20-year-old blood feud between Junejo and Kalhoro clans, which claimed 46 lives and caused injuries to 56 people.

It also imposed Rs14.9 million fine on the warring parties in Shikarpur late on Wednesday evening.

Presided over by former federal minister Ghaus Bakhsh Mahar, the jirga was held in Wazirabad to resolve a two-decade-long conflict between the two clans.

A large number of people, along with regional influential figures, under tight security were present in the meeting.

Hearing grievances and testimonies, the grand jirga found both warring parties responsible for the 46 murders and injuries to 56 people.

According to the verdict, the casualties included 19 members of the Junejo tribe and 27 from the Kalhoro tribe, including three innocent women.

The jirga valued Rs2.5million as blood money for the murder of each man, and Rs5 million for each woman, the verdict read.

The jirga declared the Junejo party primary aggressor, ordering to pay an additional Rs10 million as a penalty for initiating the conflict.

The feud, which began over a petty theft, had turned several areas of Shikarpur, Khairpur, and Larkana into “no-go areas”, rendering thousands of acres of fertile land barren.
