German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says the government may be able to do some things to balance the energy shock caused by the US-Israel war on Iran, but that public finances could not make up for price rises in every area, Al Jazeera reports.

Answering questions in parliament, he said there were “measures we can consider” but added that “we cannot offset every price trend through tax measures or measures funded from the federal budget”.
