KARACHI, June 20: The works and services department of city government has finalised the strategy to cope with any untoward situation during monsoon, as per directives of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal.
The works and services department has divided the city into four zones under the supervision of District Officers. For public information, the phone numbers of four emergency offices have been notified.
DO Rashid Mughal has established emergency office at the fourth floor of Civic Centre. His phone numbers are 9232440 and 0300-2146958.
DO Fazal Memon’s office is established at KMC Workshop Nishtar Road with phone numbers 9215654 and 0333-21554367.
DO Abdul Shakoor Palejo’s office would work at Guru Mandir behind engineering college. People can contact him in case of any rain emergency situation at phone numbers 9231365 and 0300-2160233.
DO Hanif Mughal would work at emergency office set up at Malir Bund near Hino Pak Chowk with phone number 5389966 and 0300-2512503.
Besides, Nazim Camp Office, DCO Camp Office and ‘134’ have already been declared Central Emergency Centres by the City Nazim Mustafa Kamal.
Citizens have been advised to contact the nearest emergency centre during rainy season for any compliant.
Meanwhile, Lyari Town administration set up rain emergency centre at the town office. The town administration has asked KESC, KWSB, SSGC and other utilities to depute their staff at the centre. Town residents can lodge complaints with the centre on telephone number 2511251.
ARRANGEMENTS: Sindh Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman has directed the administrative secretaries and DCOs to ensure the implementation of all measures to meet any possible rain/flood situation in the wake of approaching monsoon.
He said canals and storm water drains be kept under effective surveillance and all measures be adopted for immediate evacuation of people in low lying areas.
Chairing a high-level meeting, he said that arrangements be made ready for timely supply of food, medicines, snake-bite vaccines and other essential articles.
The chief secretary further directed that redressal measures be taken to check emergence of water-borne diseases and plugging of water breaches and leakages.
He said liaison between various departments be promoted to ensure immediate solution of various problems so that lives and property of people could be protected.
The meeting was informed that flood in Sindh occurs due to flooding in river Indus, Balochistan hill torrents and cyclone. The establishment of flood control centres at Sindh Secretariat and Barrages as part of flood fighting arrangements, patrolling on embankments, lighting arrangements at vulnerable locations, round-the-clock check on leakages, availability of heavy machinery, communication and wireless facilities and coordination with armed forces and civil administration were also discussed in the meeting.
DCO informed the meeting that all preparations had been made to meet any rain emergency and arrangements made for 66 flow line points to ensure safe passage of water. He said that cleaning of all important drains had been completed while work on construction of new and repair of old drains was in progress. He said that arrangements had been made for draining out water from underpasses and major roads.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Ghulam Sarwar Khehro, Secretary Implementation Nazar Hussain Maher, Senior Member Board of Revenue Anwar Haider, Home Secretary Brig (Rtd) Mohtaram, Secretary (General Administration) Abdul Qadir Mangi and other officials.——PPI/APP
