Thousands of Kurds have crossed from Iraq and launched a ground offensive in Iran, Fox News reported, citing a US official.

The publication said that according to sources, many of the fighters were Iranian Kurds who had been living in Iraq for years and are now returning to northwestern Iran as part of the offensive.

“The fighters are believed to be Iranian-Kurdish militias seeking to spark a broader uprising, according to sources familiar with the development,” Fox News reported.
