KARACHI: Police and Rangers have been put on “high alert” across the metropolis in view of ongoing tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
Security at all sensitive installations, key government and semi-government offices, important buildings, airports, railway stations, bus terminals and other public places has been enhanced with increased intelligence monitoring at mosques, madressahs, imambargahs and other sensitive locations.
Special arrangements were made at all mosques during Friday’s congregations.
Rangers also carried out extensive snap checks and intelligence-based operations in various areas of Karachi in view of the prevailing security situation.
A police spokesperson said Karachi police chief Azad Khan ordered the law enforcers to remain fully vigilant and further strengthen security arrangements across the city while maintaining strict surveillance to detect any “unusual activity”.
District and zonal police officers were directed to intensify patrolling, picketing and snap checking, besides establishing designated points for random checks to ensure effective monitoring.
The spokesperson said Karachi police were utilising all available resources to safeguard the lives and property of citizens and remained fully prepared to respond to any emergency situation.
According to a Rangers spokesperson, a total of 232 snap checks were conducted during the operations, along with 14 counter-terrorism actions carried out on the basis of intelligence inputs.
As a result of these operations, nine suspects were apprehended and subsequently handed over to police and other relevant law-enforcement agencies for further legal proceedings.
The spokesperson added that during checking activities, data of 6,078 individuals was verified through surveillance devices to enhance monitoring mechanisms and facilitate the identification of suspicious persons.
The operations, the statement said, were aimed at ensuring public safety and sustaining peace in the metropolis.
